Alumni Fundraising Events

Bluebird at the Boro is one of the main fundraisers supported by Hillsboro Alumni. In the Fall 1999, Jim Overstreet wanted a tractor – Bluebird at the Boro was formed to buy this tractor --- $14,600 was raised.

Fall 2000 Hillsboro decided to do Bluebird at the Boro again because it was an event that we did well on the year before. Deirdre McNabb (school board) and the Chamber of Commerce came to Terri Breeden (assistant principal at HHS) and asked us to think about the IBO programme. Jean Litterer, past principal at HHS was consulted along with Jim Overstreet, Carol Frist, Bob Rochford, Pam Terrell (PTSA President), Sue Gilmore (HHS teacher) and Mary Catherine Bradshaw (HHS teacher). This was pursued for 5 years before it became a reality. In the beginning we were hoping that 2005 would be the first graduating class, we were only a year behind our expectations.

Bluebird at the Boro (which is supported largely by our alumni) has donated approximately $103,000 that has been used for training, equipment, books, start- up etc. for the IBO programme since Bluebird 2001. There was a hope from the Chamber and the community that THE CLUSTER could be trained by now and we would be on our way to being an IBO cluster. Not only was the money involved from our alumni, there were hours and hours of meeting about this over the years, and we are still meeting.

The Alumni ALSO have funded $29,000 to Athletics, $63,500 to Technology, $21,500 School Improvement, Arts $21,000, Academics $103,000 and Bluebird costs over the last 8 years have run about $31,000 (this is mostly postage, but we have hospitality, security, publicity to pay for too).
