History of the Americas (HOA) is a two year course of study open to IB Diploma Program candidates. The International Baccalaureate HOA region option covers the United States, Latin America, including the Caribbean, and Canada from the colonial era to the present.

Junior Year

The junior year of study entails a chronological approach to studying the region from the colonial period to the present. Students will be prepared to take the AP US History test at the end of the junior year as well as the Tennessee U.S. History End of Course test.

Senior Year

The topics will be the focus of three essays written in May of the senior year. For the third paper, students must have knowledge of two regions reflected in their essay answers. The first year of HOA also satisfies the U.S. History requirements for MNPS and the State of Tennessee.

In the second year of study, HOA students will build on the foundation of the first year with more in depth study focused on the 20th century. The prescribed IB subject of study is the Cold War, 1960 to 1979. This prescribed subject addresses East-West relations in the period 1960-1979. It focuses on the changing character of the Cold War and its impact in different areas of the World. In May of the senior year, Paper 1, which is a document/data based question, will be based on this prescribed subject. In Paper 1, students will analyze the purpose, origin, value, and limitations (POVL) of up to six sources related to this topic.
