Hillsboro Arts Students Celebrate National Black History Month

Hillsboro held our annual Black History Month Observance Thursday, Feb. 21. This was the third year for the event and considered by most in attendance to be the best one yet. This year’s student director was Jasmine West, who not only coordinated the program but also wrote and directed the play that was performed. The play was about the state of black education in America, first looking at the story of the Little Rock Nine and then moving to the present day and asking students to decide what they want their future to be like. In addition to the play, multiple songs were performed by The Hillsboro Renaissance Choir, a group lead by Mrs. Nita Smith and put together just for this special event. It is made up of the Sophisticats, the Mixed Chorus, students not enrolled in a chorus class, and faculty and staff. They performed a wide range of music from traditional African pieces to modern gospel music. There were also poems written by Hillsboro Students including Michael Eddy
and Darrell Burns . We had around 60 students involved in this year’s performance and hope to increase that next year. Thank you to all who attended and to all of the students, faculty, and staff that were involved.
